The Mindset Of Major Weightloss

So many people start their weightloss journey only to find themselves giving up before it has even begun. Most of us tend to lose a few pounds maybe for a special occasion, or too hit a certain number on the scale to then turn around and go right back to old eating habits and sedentary ways. We see transformation posts and think that could never be me....but I am here to tell you that you..yes you can achieve that transformation you have always been wanting.

The number one thing that holds people back when embarking on this journey is their mindset. If you have been overweight for a few years or even the majority of your life it will take time to change your lifestyle and mind regarding food and exercise. You will need patience with yourself  and may even need a heart check regarding your relationship with food.

When I was at my heaviest weight around 232 lbs I began to feel that I was not honoring the Lord with my body and how I was eating. Instead of turning to Christ and laying my problems at His feet, I would turn to food and expect it to make me feel better. Yet no matter how much I ate I would never be satisfied. Sound familiar? If you can relate to this, I urge you to stop and pray right now and ask Jesus to reveal to you if you have been turning to food for comfort instead of turning to Him. Ask Him to help you on this journey and renew your mind regarding food and exercise.

"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30

So you have been living a life that has got you to a point where you are unhappy with your weight. Before we even begin to tackle specifics on nutrition and exercise you have to realize how important it is to retrain or renew your mind. You have to see your journey as a changing of lifestyle. Not a diet. Not a quick fix. Literally a new way of life. So how do we go about changing our mindset from being overweight to becoming fit and healthy? Well I am so glad you asked.

Charlie "Tremendous" Jones once said.... “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.”

Changing our mindset begins by filling it with new ideas. If you don't know how to eat properly then you need start reading on nutrition, portion control and healthy foods. Not sure how to exercise, then read about different fitness routines and workouts to add to your lifestyle.

When I first started my journey I began to write out scriptures that deal with dying to yourself and honoring God. I would read these over and over, and even put them up on my refrigerator door to see before grabbing food. (Gal 5:24,Gal 2:20,1 Cor 10:31, Rom 12:2)

Then to tackle the physical, I would search the internet and go to the library to find books/articles and blogs on how to eat healthy and different types of workouts. This is something I still do today as I am always learning and wanting to try new routines and recipes.

Remember if you have been a certain weight for majority of your life it will take time to change your habits. Not being patient with yourself as you change your mindset is the biggest obstacle for major weight loss. Reading and educating yourself on nutrition and fitness will help enable you to start making changes in your life. Making smaller changes will help ensure you are making a lifestyle change and not just seeking a quick fix. Creating a new mindset in how you see food and exercise is so critical. You need to begin to see food as fuel, and with God's help (if you struggle with emotional overeating) you can stop turning to food for comfort and turn to Him.

I know you are probably ready for some practical tips and advice for weight loss and I will share those with you in blogs to come along with lifestyle changes that have worked for me. Now what works for me will not work for everyone, and that is why it is so important to educate yourself on nutrition and exercise to see what will work for you and your lifestyle.

Feel free to message me if you would like to discuss more on this in private on my facebook page or instagram or comment below to let me know if I can pray for you on your journey.

Even though I am getting closer to my ideal weight, I still struggle with my old mindset at times. I don't know if it will ever go away, but I do know that as that as time goes by it gets easier to get back on track after falling and the time between falling and getting back up gets shorter and shorter. This is my prayer and desire for you as well.
